Sergeant Ferris Frederick Dowling was born in Harriston, Ontario on August 24, 1884 to parents Richard and Annie Dowling.
Dowling was an electrical engineer when recruited to the 1st Depot Battalion, British Columbia Regiment on May 10, 1918, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He arrived in England aboard the SS Saturnia on July 22, 1918. Dowling served in England with the 3rd Reserve Battalion, the 6th Field Company Canadian Engineers, and was also attached to the Khaki University Witley Detachment. Dowling returned to Canada after the war and was discharged July 14, 1919 in Vancouver, British Columbia
